Art Collections Cataloguing and Preservation Project
In 2005, the Albers Foundation launched a major project, expected to take two years to complete,
through which it is documenting the composition, provenance, condition, and exhibition and publication history of
the more than 4,000 artworks by Josef and Anni Albers in its core collections. In the course of the cataloguing
project, all art collection items are also being digitally captured to form a photographic archive that will enable
the Foundation to broaden access to its collections via publications and on the internet.
Major funding for the project has been received to date from the National Endowment for the Arts, ARTStor, the Thaw
Charitable Trust and The Bay and Paul Foundations. Additional contributions are being sought to help ensure the project's
completion. Those interested in learning more about supporting the Art Collections Cataloguing and Preservation Project by
means of a tax-deductible gift are invited to contact the Foundation.
This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts
Josef Albers Catalogue Raisonné
The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation is preparing a catalogue raisonné of Josef Albers' paintings. The catalogue will document the more than 2,500 paintings created by Albers during his lifetime, including paintings on masonite, wood, canvas, and paper. The entry for each art work in the catalogue will include a color illustration, a complete description of the painting, along with provenance, exhibition history, literature references, and, where appropriate, notes on media and technique. A timeline of Albers' life, comprehensive bibliography, and essays will complete the multi-volume catalogue, scheduled to begin publication in 2012-2013.
The catalogue raisonné will be a definitive and authoritative compilation, documenting all paintings by Josef Albers known to be authentic. We encourage owners of Albers' paintings to get in touch with the Foundation, to ensure their works are included and properly documented in the catalogue.
