Narratives

Robert Rauschenberg

Rauschenberg was a student of Josef’s at Black Mountain, and was probably the best-known artist of any who studied with him. There are many conflicting versions of their relationship. What is clear is that Josef was a vitally important force in Rauschenberg’s life: a sort of father figure who both had deep influence on him and against whom he rebelled in many ways. At Black Mountain, Anni was friendly with Rauschenberg’s wife, the artist Susan Weil, and always remembered her fondly.
