Narratives

AT&T commission

In 1984,  Anni was asked to design four large tapestries to go inside the atrium of Philip Johnson’s new AT&T building on Madison Avenue and 56th Street in Manhattan. She oversaw their execution with utmost care, happy to realize some of her print designs in colored thread. It was a reversal of her usual stance that the appearance of an artwork should derive from the process with which it was made, but Anni was given to such contradictions—as was Josef, who consented to Aubusson tapestries based on his oil paintings. By being in the AT&T building, Anni was only a block or so away from the Corning Glass building, where there were large structural constellation murals by Josef.

One of the four tapestries based on Anni's print images from the Orchestra series.
