Announcing The Nicholas Fox Weber Prize

Apr 2, 2026

The Trustees of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation have established the Nicholas Fox Weber Prize to be awarded annually, with a stipend of $25,000.

Fifty years ago, Nicholas Fox Weber was appointed to work officially for the Albers Foundation. Saturday, March 27, 1976, was the day of Josef’s funeral. Following Mass at the Holy Infant Church and burial in the town cemetery in Orange, everyone returned to 808 Birchwood Drive. Lee Eastman and Anni Albers had a conversation after which Lee asked Nick if he would begin work the following Monday as a paid employee of the Estate of Josef Albers. Nick, having been introduced to Anni and Josef by Ruth Agoos in 1971, had by then become a close friend to both and had worked on a range of projects concerning their art.

In Nick’s honor, the Trustees of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation (Charlotte Fox Weber and Rupert Taylor, with NFW abstaining) have established the Nicholas Fox Weber Prize. It will be awarded annually, with a stipend of $25,000, to an individual selected by Nick—a writer, curator, filmmaker, or anyone who has helped advance the appreciation of painting, sculpture, architecture, or design. The recipient might be someone who has taken one of these art forms in new and original directions; equally, it might be someone whose way of presenting or writing about art enhances the pleasure of being alive.

Nominations, including for oneself, are welcome; each should give examples of the candidate’s work and be accompanied by a statement of no more than 500 words describing the nominee’s contribution to the visual arts and the reasons it merits recognition.

Submissions should be sent to nfw@albersfoundation.org and charliefoxweber@gmail.com with the subject line “The Nicholas Fox Weber Prize.” The deadline is June 12, Anni Albers’s birthday.

The awarding of the prize will be celebrated publicly with a short text by Nick explaining the reasons for which the recipient has been selected.
